Cruelty By Husband Or Relative

It has been added to the IPC to check the menace of dowry deaths. Any person who forces a women to commit suicide, or causes danger to her life, or harasses her with a view of coercing her or any other person related to her to meet any unlawful demand for property or cash, is punishable under this code. If a woman commits suicide within a period of seven years from the date of marriage, and that the husband or the relatives had subjected her to cruelty or undue harassment, then the Court may presume with regards to the circumstances of the case that such suicide has been abetted by her husband or the relatives.

Punishment

Whoever subjects a woman to cruelty shall be punishable with imprisonment, which may extend to three years, and will also be liable to fine.
